Vigil: Motion Alarm Sentry

Why it exists

Some moments leave people watchfully alone: a traveler napping in a hostel bunk or a tent, a lone worker at a remote site, someone stepping away from their gear, a parent who wants an eye on a doorway. Security cameras answer that with hardware, accounts, and cloud storage. Vigil answers it with the phone already in your pocket — set up in ten seconds, watching in real time, and architecturally incapable of leaking footage because it never records any.

What it does

• Point, arm, done. A ten-second setup with a countdown so you can leave the frame.
• Detects what matters. People, moving vehicles, and (optionally) bicycles — while ignoring parked cars and background motion to keep false alarms low.
• Listens, too. An optional Sound mode catches footsteps or a car pulling up even off-camera — and filters out everyday noise like birdsong.
• A loud alarm, not a quiet log. The siren overrides the silent switch. It acts in the moment instead of archiving it.
• Live target lock. A targeting reticle frames what Vigil sees on the preview, in real time.
• The earbud trick. Wear an AirPod and the alarm plays only in your ear — a quiet, personal alert for shared spaces (a hostel dorm at 2 a.m. doesn't need a siren).
• Private by architecture. Detection runs entirely on-device. Nothing is recorded, stored, or uploaded — there is no server side at all.

Under the hood

Vigil is a native SwiftUI app built for iOS 26, and a deliberately Apple-stack project: the Vision framework for person detection, a bundled Core ML model for vehicles (computed on-device), real-time two-band audio analysis for the sound modality, and StoreKit 2 for the subscription. The detection logic is pure, unit-tested Swift — including a motion gate that distinguishes a moving car from a parked one, and an audio gate that learns the room's ambient level and rejects high-frequency noise like birds.
